Enjoy this Kirk Douglas: The Centennial Collection DVD Box Set, showcasing 8 unforgettable performances from the screen legend.
Renowned for his determination, charisma, commanding voice and magnetic presence, Kirk Douglas had an illustrious film career that continues to entertain audiences of all ages. While his heroic roles in epic films like Spartacus made him a global sensation, Douglas was also equally adept at romancing women or stirring strong emotions as the complicated villain.
This collection includes Spartacus, Lonely are the Brave, War Wagon, The Last Sunset, The List of Adrian Messenger, Man Without a Star, For Love or Money and A Lovely Way to Die.
Spartacus
Director Stanley Kubrick tells the tale of Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), the bold gladiator slave and Varinia (Jean Simmons), the woman who believed in his cause. Challenged by the power-hungry General Crassus (Laurence Olivier), Spartacus is forced to face his convictions and the power of the Imperial Rome at its glorious height.
The inspirational true account of man's eternal struggle for freedom, Spartacus combines history with spectacle to create a moving drama of love and commitment.
Lonely Are the Brave
Kirk Douglas ignites the screen with one of his most personal roles as a cowboy on a collision course with the modern world in Lonely are the Brave. After landing himself in jail trying to break out his friend, Jack Burns (Douglas) finds himself alone and on the run from the law.
Leading the manhunt is Sheriff Morey Johnson (Walter Matthau), who must bring Burns to justice despite his own sympathy for the fugitive. Co-starring Gena Rowlands, George Kennedy and Carroll O’Connor, Lonely are the Brave is an unforgettable portrait of a lawless man defying life in an orderly world.
The War Wagon
Two cinematic legends, John Wayne and Kirk Douglas, team up to seize a small fortune in gold in this action-packed western classic. Wayne plays Taw Jackson, a range-hardened rancher who's hell-bent on capturing the infamous War Wagon, an ironclad stagecoach protected by a small army of men and owned by a thieving cattle baron who robbed Taw of his gold and good name years before.
To get even, Jackson recruits Lomax (Douglas), a brash gunslinger, and a raucous crew of misfits and readies them to pull off one of the most impossible heists of all time.
The Last Sunset
Brendan O'Malley arrives at the Mexican home of old flame Belle Breckenridge to find her married to a drunkard getting ready for a cattle drive to Texas. Hot on O'Malley's heels is lawman Dana Stribling who has a personal reason for getting him back into his jurisdiction. Both men join Breckenridge and his wife on the drive.
As they near Texas tensions mount, not least because Stribling is starting to court Belle and O'Malley is increasingly drawn by her daughter Missy.
The List of Adrian Messenger
British army Col. Anthony Gethryn (George C. Scott) is contacted by his old friend, Adrian Messenger (John Merivale), to investigate 11 men, whose names Messenger provides.
After a plane carrying Messenger is blown up by a mysterious perpetrator, Gethryn determines that the men on the list had been prisoners of war in Burma during World War II -- and that someone connected to a minor British aristocrat (Clive Brook) is methodically murdering each man on the list.
Man Without a Star
Man without a Star is an exciting western about a rugged loner who gets caught up in a bloody range war when he falls in love with two beautiful women. Dempsey Rae (Douglas) is a wandering cowboy who doesn’t like the fact that his open spaces are being fenced in by greedy ranchers.
That doesn’t stop him from helping a town fight back against ranch owner Reed Bowman (Jeanne Crain) or from flirting with the town’s sexy madam (Claire Trevor).
For Love or Money
Despairing at her three daughters' choices in men, an eccentric widow pays attorney Deke Gentry $100,000 to pair them up with pre-chosen mates.
Although he easily fixes up Bonnie and Jan, sister Kate proves to be a more troublesome match. Set up with a boozy baby food magnate who continually stands her up, Kate soon discovers who's the better catch and decides to bag Deke instead.
A Lovely Way to Die
Schuyler (Kirk Douglas) is a hard-boiled detective who turns in his badge when he believes the criminals are being handled with kid gloves and too much respect. He is hired by prominent attorney Fredericks (Eli Wallach) as a bodyguard for his client Rena (Sylva Koscina), who is accused of murdering her husband. Her playboy boyfriend Fleming (Kenneth Haigh) is also under suspicion.
Schuylur keeps one eye on his beautiful suspect while trying to uncover more information about the murder. Fredericks displays a disarming, folksy nature which belies his shrewdness. The detective soon comes to believe that Rena is being framed for the murder. Singer Jackie Wilson delivers the song "A Lovely Way To Die" during the opening credits of this murder mystery.
Featuring co-stars such as Rock Hudson, John Wayne, Laurence Olivier, Tony Curtis, George C. Scott, Walter Matthau and more, this collection is a stunning tribute to the legacy of a true silver screen icon!
